RE: buying a used RV in the US (UK travellers)

Try Lazydays Rv in Seffner, Fl. They have a huge inventory, you can check online. Florida would be a good place to start your adventure this time of the year. You could follow a southern route towards California & stay reasonable warm thru the worst of the winter.

RE: Thousand Trails Membership

Most of the negative opinions you will get refer to the sales end of the process, and yes stay as far away as you can. The TT system of parks & the people that staff them (many are members themselves) are wonderful. Membership dues are locked in at purchase & do not go up every year. You have asked a question on a subject that gets a lot of discussion. Do a search & you'll see. We have been members for 4 years. We recieved our initial membership as part of the purchase pkg. from Lazy Days Rv. We later upgraded to a plan that allows us to stay at any park for 3wks, & we can move from park to park to park all year long for $500 a year. It's been a great deal for us.

RE: Everglades question

Take Tamiami Trail west. There's the Mikosoukee Casino, they have a good buffet. Also further west are several airboat rides, all are pretty much the same. A little further west is Clyde Butchers Gallery, an award winning photographer has spent the last 30 yrs or so photographing the Everglades in stunning black & white format.

RE: So this is what is happening to the dealers now

They estimate that the bailout will cost $38,000 for every man, woman & child in the country. I have an idea........How about giving that money to the people? With cash in our pockets we don't need credit. We could afford our homes, pay off our creditcards, buy health ins., send our kids to college, replace our 10 yr. old car & in general give a good swift kick to our economy. Let the Wall street banks collapse. The banks that have practiced smart business will survive. What do you think?

RE: Niagara Falls Don't be a sucker like me

We were there last May & ran into these guys who directed our driver to the parking lot for $10. Our driver & his wife are handicapped & I voted to look elsewhere for parking, thinking there had to be closer handicap parking. Didn't find any though. For lunch we went over to the casino for the buffet. It was pretty good ($14. I think) Our driver won $1000 on slots & his wife $650!....Oh, the falls were great too!

RE: thousand trails

:R It is true that there is a period of time between the free weekend & the time you purchase a resale membership, though I'm not sure how long. It is false that sites don't have a minimum of w/e. Yearly membership dues are locked in & will not go up. There are no other maintainance charges. TT is a time-share. Like I said, do your research & choose what works best for you. Haappy Trails!

RE: thousand trails

Yes we did. We have stayed at many, many of the 1000 trails preserves, from Fl. to Wa.. We have been members for 4 yrs.. Our membership allows us to stay for 3 wks. at a time & we can move directly from park to park to park. We have spent all but 5 weeks in 1000 trails in 2008 & it has cost us $500, our yearly dues. Obviously we are happy with them, but you will find a lot of contrasting views. Basically it comes down to what your looking for. We have found the campground staff to be very nice & willing to go out of their way to be of service. We avoid the sales staff! LOL! Like I said, do a search in this forum, you'll find volumes of info.

RE: thousand trails

Do a search on 1000 Trails. Then if you like what they have to offer look for resales on E-bay. $12,000 plu $700 per year is obscene. Memberships can be found for pennies on the dollar with yearly dues less than $500. Some for transfer fees alone. But it's only worthwhile if you plan to use the preserves enough to justify the yearly dues.

RE: Need help with Direct TV local channels

Direct TV offers access to the east coast & west coast feeds ( channels 380-389 ) for about $6. extra p/mo.. It won't give you your Chicago stations but you'll get CBS, ABC, NBC & Fox national broadcasts. When we miss a show at the east coast time we can catch it 3 hours later on the west coast broadcast,or watch a program 2x.

RE: Alaska- Earliest date to leave..

We crossed into Canada on May 1st. Most of the services were open including the rv parks. However they didn't offer full hookups till after the 15th. They don't even think of turning on the water till then & the danger of frozen pipes is pretty much over.

RE: Breakdowns.

We were returning from a 3mo. trip to Alaska. We stopped in Indiana for a few weeks. Took our bus in for an oil change where we found out our radiator had cracked & we had coolant in the transmission fluid. Had to have our 38' home towed 70 miles to Indianapolis & the Allison shop. We stayed in a motel for 5 days while the repairs were made (we have always been able to stay in the bus previously) Major headache? YES! Major expense? YES! ( ins. denied, said it was a manufacturing defect!) Wasn't fun watching the tow truck driver doing 70 mpr along the interstate towing our home either! How often do these breakdowns happen? Not very often if you keep up with maintanence. Sometimes you need a ZEN-like attitude. As bad as it was, can you imagine if it had happened while we were in the Yukon? Thousands of miles away from any Allison shop, hundreds from adequate tow trucks? We actually consider ourselves lucky! We were fresh from the most incredible trip of our lives. The inconvienence just didn't measure up so we counted our blessings & continue on. We try not to dwell on what might go wrong because the longer we do this the more likely they will go wrong. It's part of the lifestyle--remember the first time someone told you had termites? or any one of the number of things that can go wrong with a house?
jor expense? YES ( ins. denied claim, said it was a manufacturing defect
